WTF is a Bush Monkey?

Posted on July 16th, 2010.

A fair question and one the deserves a sensible and honest response. To be a Bush Monkey is to be at one with the smell of corruption and fat cash. If you ever have the good fortune to meet a Bush Monkey during your errands or daily perambulations you can rest assured that they are fully loaded – in all the good ways.

A Bush Monkey spotted in it's natural environment

The specifics can be tedious so I’ll keep it brief. The Bush Monkeys are currently four in number. Recently confirmed fertile DJ and producer Franky D, apprentice electrician and dedicated nail technician Mark “Beamdog” Behmer, rabid multi-instrumentalist Sandor “Barney” Bende and of course, your host for this spiel, Benny P on timetabling and accounts.

Now if you care to read on a little longer I can answer your second question – the one about “Why is my daughter so obsessed with these bushy monkeys?“. But to do so I’m going to have to fill your God fearing soul with a little evolution…

It all started when old sparing buddies Barney and Benny got together for what are called “loop pedal jams“. Basically you surround yourself with instruments, microphones and a loop pedal. One of us would lay down an loop, say a chord progression on something, and then it’s over to the other person to put something on top. And so it goes back and forth recording parts as fast as your little brain can think them up untill it sounds like an orchestra from the future or the devil coming round the S bend.

Then one day we hooked up with DJ Franky D and his Ableton Live rig. Ohhh… sweet sweetness. Not only more options for arrangements but also it started sounding a lot fatter as the man set his skills to work. And so for the next year our three love-able protagonists would get together every week to jam and make “a song in day”.

All of a sudden Franky D fathered a baby elephant called Jack so he needed to take a little time to work out how to raise an elephant in a human society. So Barney and I started turning our minds to the realization of a live Bush Monkeys show. That idea started to snow ball real quick so we hurriedly hired ourselves a real life gunslinger to take care of the bad guys. His name was Behmer. Mark Behmer. Strangely we found him behind Hungry Jacks trying to squash a bloke called Charlie. Long story but the point is it all fell together beautifully as the man can play like a possum and sing like a koala on heat.

(Fast forward a year or two)

Inspired by the reckless, good time years of the late President George Bush Junior, the Bush Monkeys recently completed their first international tour in support of Lady Gaga in Taiwan. It was an unprecedented success and although the none of the Bush Monkeys ever got to actually meet the Ms Gaga in person they were always sure to politely rev up the crowd at the end their sets with a “WHO’S LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING CHRISTINA SHAKE HER GROOVE THANG?”.
